Title:   Water Pipe

Description:   Mended from many fragments, few chips missing. Standard archaic water pipe with short tongue and flat-topped flange at upper end, long tongue and open flange at lower end. Carefully cut oval setting hole near upper end. Ridge at bottom of each flange. Pinkish buff clay, light buff surface. Band of dilute red to brown glaze around end of long tongue and on inside.
Water deposit in bottom third of pipe. Dipinti in broad red lines.
Also neatly cut graffiti on flanges: 1) only single stroke preserved, fragment of flange next to left missing; 2) on lower flange.

Context:   Found in position in the archaic pipe line that fed the Southeast Fountain House; in Road Cut I S.W. of the mint. After washouts following heavy rain in October 1955, the pipes collapsed. The pieces were collected and mended (March 1956).
