Description: | A corner fragment. The plinth was set down ca. half its height in the top of the die. The exposed upper face flares out in a very gentle curve. On either side of the corner on the concealed vertical face is a horizontal slot. Top and exposed vertical face are smooth polished. Eleusinian limestone. Several non-joining fragments from same block were left on the marble pile in front of the Library of Pantainos. All known fragments of this block were brought in by 2 June 1964. Three join. Two are floaters, and one of these is finished with excellent anathyrosis proving the existence of another block in this course (H.A.T.). ADDENDA According to Olga Palagia this is a cornice fragment (May 2003). | |
