Title:   Frieze Block

Description:   Top and one end cut away, one end broken. Back rough finished with long vertical chisel strokes of a single point. Undercutting in middle of back for a shift bar. Metope faces finished with toothed chisel; triglyph faces with drove. This block, like A 3569, originally comprised three triglyphs and two metopes, and was cantilevered on a column. From an intermediate use are two small dowel holes 0.85m. apart near one edge of original underside (one retains iron) and two cuttings for the ends of bars in the original back.

Context:   Reused in south outer wall of Roman Agora between fountain and S.W. corner of the building. This, A 3569 and A 3571 stand upright on the toichobate imbedded in a wall made of miscellaneous ancient blocks supplemented with field stones, broken tiles and coarse mortar.
