Bowl With Outturned Rim.

Three-fourths of wall and rim restored.

High, flaring ring foot with deep groove near bottom; steeply beveled, concave resting surface; convex underside. Angular body. Wall slightly offset from floor on interior. Shallow groove below rim on inside. Four small radiating palmettes within rouletting bordered by circles. Micaceous, yellowish red fabric (5YR 5/6); shiny brown-to-black glaze.

The form of the foot as well as rouletting within inscribed circles indicates the piece is either an import or an imitation of an imported piece. Rouletting bounded by inscribed circles is a commonplace of Italian black wares (see, for example, references under 1643 and 1644). It is also found on eastern gray wares (e.g. Samaria III, no. 39, p. 259, fig. 52:39), on ESA (Burkhalter 1987, no. 134, p. 381, fig. 15), and on Pergamene sigillata (PF VI, no. 305, p. 237, pl. 18).
