Brim fragment with groove at outer edge. A bit of the glaze lines flaked on left Niobid's himation. H. 0.014; est. diam. 0.14; max. dim. 0.09. C. Clairmont, AK 6, 1963, pl. 8:1, 2; Roberts, Pyxis, p. 133, cat. no. 2, pl. 80:1, 3; Lezzi-Hafter, Eretria-Maler, p. 347, cat. no. 255, fig. 85:c, d; LIMC VI, 1992, p. 916, no. 8, s.v. Niobidai.

On top side, slaughter of the Niobids. At the left, a Niobid youth (head, right arm, lower legs missing) moves to right, dressed in a himation over both shoulders. There are wounds in his chest and thighs. In front of him, a dead Niobid youth (head, right arm, and right foot missing) lies on the ground (indicated by wavy incised lines). He too wears a himation. At the right break is a bit of drapery belonging to a third Niobid. On underside, olive wreath with fruit. Red: blood. White: fruit.

For the subject, see C. Clairmont, "Niobiden," AK 6, 1963, pp. 23--32; more generally, LIMC VI, 1992, pp. 914--929, s.v. Niobidai (W. Geominy). For the laurel wreath with white berries on the underside of the brim, see Worcester, Mass., 1936.148 by the Eretria Painter (ARV2 1250, 33; Lezzi-Hafter, Eretria-Maler, p. 347, cat. no. 254, pl. 163:c; Addenda 354); New York, M.M.A. 06.1021.119 (Richter and Milne, Shapes and Names, fig. 140). Lezzi-Hafter (Eretria-Maler, p. 347, cat. no. 255) thinks that 1009 may be by Aison and suggests comparison with his Theseus cup in Madrid, 11265 (ARV2 1174, 1; Addenda 339).
