I, youth reclining to left on a couch, playing kottabos. He holds a skyphos in his left hand and twirls the cup with his right. Around his hips and legs is a himation. At the foot of the couch is an object identified by Vanderpool as a kottabos stand but which looks more like a flute case with mouthpiece-box hanging on the wall. Reserved line for tondo border. Preliminary sketch. Relief contour.

In the preliminary sketch, the youth held a cup instead of a skyphos. For the identification of the object as a kottabos stand, see Vanderpool, Hesperia 15, 1946, p. 280, sub cat. nos. 35 and 37. For the subject, see B. Sparkes, "Kottabos: An Athenian After-Dinner Game," Archaeology 13, 1960, pp. 202--207; N.
