Floor fragment. Glaze misfired on outside from stacking in the kiln.

Max. dim. 0.08; est. diam. of tondo 0.09.

I, floral (part of spiral tendril). In the field, traces of an inscription:

then a leaf. Red or white (flaked): inscription; leaf. Reserved line for tondo border.

The floral ornament was probably a palmette quatrefoil. For this decoration, see J. R. Mertens, AK 22, 1979 [ pp. 22--37], p. 36 with bibliography and examples; also Euphronios, p. 186 (ARV2 60, 63, listed here, does not have a palmette quatrefoil in the tondo). The cup attributed to Euphronios and mentioned by Mertens on p. 36 is the one now in the art market that shows on side A, Thanatos and Hypnos carrying the body of Sarpedon (Euphronios, cat. no. 34). Add Malibu, the J. Paul Getty Museum 77.AE.20 (Euphronios, cat. no. 35). From the small bit of ornament that remains on 1600, it seems closest to that in the tondo of Madrid 11267 by Oltos (ARV2 58, 53; Addenda 164). I do not know if this has a leaf in accessory red or white, as 1600 has.
