Wall fragment with start of return and thin brownish glaze on inside, blackish toward bottom. Glaze brownish on outside. Max. dim. 0.028.
Man (bald head with wreath, right shoulder, and side of chest) with head thrown back, looking straight at viewer. At the very top is a bit of relief line, which indicates the start of a pattern. Relief contour. Dilute glaze: muscles; beard. Red: wreath.
In the summer of 1958, Beazley compared 1659 with the drunken symposiast on Louvre G 345 by the Nausicaa Painter (ARV2 1108, 16; Addenda 330).
