Description:   Large guard for the hilt of a sword, inlay carving of palmettes at the top on either side. Traces of iron pins and silver (?) which must have been carefully picked out. Inscibed beneath. <graphic>
Mr. Gejvall considers that the handle was cut lengthwise from a large tusk, well in from the surface. He considers the piece too large to be elephant ivory and suggest mammoth tusk.
"M. Farnsworth can find no trace of silver and Mr. Shear believes the inlay material must have been gold".
