Category:   Pottery
Description:   Three fragments from a thin-walled skyphos.
a) From the rim. Wreath of small pointed leaves, with berries; below, a bit of handle ornament; a plant spray, and at right, facing right, the upper part of a draped female figure. She wears a thin chiton, necklace, earrings, a double fillet (reserved) around the front part of her head, and a tasseled ribbon (black) once with white over(?) tying her 'lampadion' curls at the back. Fine relief contour throughout; white, yellowed over, for the jewelry; white painted over black for the berries of the plant spray. Added clay for the berries at the rim.
b) From the lower wall. At bottom, a bit of crisscross lower zone, then a reserved band, then the figured zone, with parts of two figures; at left, a pair of nude legs, front; some drapery behind, and staff in front; at right, a foot, left, with the bottom of a dress.
c) From the wall beneath a handle. Part of the handle ornament; palmette, spirals and leaves.
Elaborate miniaturist work. Inside, good black glaze with edge of rim reserved; outside, from ground line up, the glaze badly mottled and grayed in firing.
