Title:   Red Figure Panathenaic Amphora
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Many fragments preserve most of the lip, both handles, the base and much of the wall. Restored in plaster. Panathenaic shape. Flaring echinus lip; small handles, below lip to shoulder; plain foot flat on top; ring around neck. Around outer face of lip, olive wreath, the leaves reserved, the berries white; two palmettes, vertically opposed, at each of the lower handle attachments. Below the figures, band of maeander broken by checkerboard squares. No trace of division into panels: side walls missing below shoulder.
A) Procession of four(?) youths, moving right; parts of three preserved, space at the right for a fourth, missing. In the center, a slender tree with laurel-like leaves and white berries. The youths are wreathed, and, in so far as preserved, clad alike in full himatia variously draped. The first and second figures have long hair curling to their shoulder; of the third the top of the head only remains. The second figure looks back toward the first; between them is a shallow tray(?) which they appear to be carrying, held low. Inscribed over and just in front of the head of the first figure: <graphic>; of the third, ΧΡΣ[
B) The procession continues: three youths, right, similar to those on A, their hair respectively long and curly, short, and lanky. The figure at the left carries a large amphora on his shoulder, steadied by his right hand. He looks back to the left. Written from just above the amphora, the inscription: <graphic>
Relief contour for profiles and napes; some brown details and drapery shading. White for the berries of the wreaths and presumably for the inscriptions, of which now only the stain remains.
