Title:   Vessel Fragment: Gnathia Vase

Description:   From the wall of a large open vase. Outside, elaborate painted decoration: an ivy garland (white); hanging from it, two broad dark red streamers and a white leaf; over painting in thinned glaze on the white; and in white on the red.
Good black glaze, considerably pitted, inside.
ADDENDA There is also a non-joining rim fragment from the sherds.

Probably non-attic, not S. Italian(?), may be 4th. c. (GRG + LT).
Must be Gnathia, probably from a bell krater. Cf. Langlotz (1932),Würzburg, pl. 241, no. 833, and T.B.L. Webster, "Masks on Gnathia Vases", JHS 71 (1951), pp. 222-232. Webster dates Würzburg vase (p. 223, no. 29) 3rd. quarter of 4th c.

Could well be of a bowl rather than a bell krater (JRG, July 1973).
