Title:   Black Figure Pyxis Fragment

Description:   Fragment from upper wall with part of sharply triangular lip and start of vertical flange. A fine ridge at junction of lip and wall. In center, a charioteer, bearded, to right, his outstretched hands hold reins and a long whip; upper part of chariot body, top of wheel and rumps of horses are preserved. At left, the forequarters of a second team, right; off-horse wears a broad decorated collar. Purple for hair of charioteer, body and wheel of chariot, tails and manes of horses, also for three narrow lines on inside near top, for a broader band below, and probably for a band on outside of vertical flange. White for charioteer's long garment. Incision for both outlines and inner details; note the charioteer's beard. Single line of glaze above scene.
Fine pinkish-buff clay; good black glaze.
Context:   Well I, sifting earth, unknown depth.
