Title:   Black Figure Lid Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   About half the lid preserved, mended from many pieces. Gently domed lid with down-curved rim; globular knob handle finished with a small straight-sided finial. The underside reserved, decorated with a broad black band around the outer part, and a circle and dot at the center. On the outside are zones of ornament separated by narrow black lines in groups of two or three: at the base of the handle, tongues; then a ribbon-fold zigzag; then a broad figured zone. On the rim, linked buds and dots. The figured zone shows a battle scene with single combatants and chariots: probably Greeks and Amazons. Added purple freely used; an added color, presumably white, was used for the long dress of one charioteer, for the flesh of at least one of the figures, and for shield devices. The knob is black; the space just below it reserved, with a purple band around. The finial is purple, except for a black line around its upper edge.
