Agora Object: P 15841
Inventory Number:   P 15841
Section Number:   ΟΑ 1062
Title:   Red Figure Oinochoe
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Mouth and handle, much of body, and part of foot missing and restored in plaster. Shape similar to P 15840 (ΟΑ 1061). The upper and lower wall fragments do not join but their association seems certain, and the fragments as preserved make a close estimate of the height to just below the lip. Lip, restored on analogy of P 14793 (ΟΑ 1006), may as well have been of the shallower type (cf. P 15840). Substantial trace of mastos on preserved shoulder fragment.
Reserved: face of shoulder ridge, at front; mastos; grooves either side of ring at top of foot and between mouldings on vertical face, washed with pink; underside of foot.
Ornament: tongue pattern on shoulder; egg and dot below scene, reaching right around vase. Wreath around neck in added clay and white.
Figured scene: part of the drapery (Doric chiton) one foot and one arm of a female figure mounting a chariot, right. The chariot is drawn by four horses, of which the lower bodies of all, the heads of two, remain. Facing the horses stands a draped male figure (chlamys), the upper body preserved. He extends both hands toward the head of the first horse.
Technique: relief contour for the arm of the driver, for the front of the chariot, for the horses' legs and the preserved head; also for the boy's outstretched arm (so far as preserved) but not for his hands or drapery. The reins are indicated by fine lines dran in the glaze when it was nearly dry. White: on the wreath, on the goad (part of this preserved on shoulder fragment with mastos); for the charioteer's bracelet and for a circle around the brooch of the boy's cloak; all much faded. Black border on chiton. Drawing in fine black line.
