Title:   Red Figure Oinochoe Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Fragmentary lower body, mended from several pieces. For the shape cf. P 15840 and P 15841.
Reserved: groove above and below ring at junction of body and foot; underside of foot (the foot itself missing).
Ornament: below the scene, continuous around the vase, a band of maeanders in groups of four separated by checkerboard squares. Of these, four have black centers and corners; in the fifth the center and corner squares are reserved, each with a black dot. At the back, elaborate palmette and tendril ornament.
Figured scene (left to right): next to the handle ornament, much of a youthful male figure standing right, partly draped in an himation (missing: the upper front part of the body, the head save for a few brown curls at the nape, and parts of the lower legs). Approaching him at a gallop, a quadriga; eight forefeet and part of a chariot wheel remain. Beyond the chariot and again next to the handle ornament, a second draped standing figure, right, apparently similar to the first; feet and lower drapery only preserved.
Technique: relief contour for the horses' feet and the chariot wheel; not for the standing figures or the ornament. Excellent glaze with metallic splotches. Very careful work. Drawing in fine black.
Context:   Oinochoe deposit.
