Title:   Black Figure Oinochoe Fragment

Description:   Put together from many pieces; the profile can be restored complete except for the edge of the lip. Oinochoe type I: echinus foot; broad ovoid body forming a continuous curve with the wide neck; trefoil mouth; double rolled handle. Large reserved and figured panel at one side; on the other side, near the handle, two reserved triangles. Panel bordered above by a band of lotus and palmette, double and alternating, above a row of incised rosettes: both patterns with alternating red and black petals; white dots between the tips of the rosette petals. In the panel, horse and rider galloping right. The rider wears a jerkin with short sleeves and a waist-length overdress(?) the hem of which floats out over the horse's back. The garments are purple, their broad hems black, ornamented with incision and with rows of white dots along the edges. Purple also for the horse's belly and hooves.
Fine fabric; excellent glaze. The neck glazed inside; the handle reserved and decorated with stripes of brown. Very careful incision.
Context:   Well, upper fill.
