Title:   Red Figure Lekanis with Lid

Description:   Mended from many pieces; of the bowl, parts of rim and wall and most of one handle missing; of the lid, about one-third of the top and rim. Restored in plaster. Bowl: substantially rounded ring foot; walls rounded to vertical rim with flange inset for lid. Horizontal band handles, with a small horned projection at their ends. Glazed over all except resting surface of foot, and zones between handles, these decorated with vertical zigzags in black. Lid: shallow, very slightly domed; plain downturned rim. Central knob handle, flat on top, the sides straight and narrowing slightly, set on a rather tall spreading stem. Red figured decoration: on the top of the knob, an eight-spoked wheel; on the lid, from the center, separated by glazed and reserved bands, egg and dot, around the stem of the knob; then pairs of opposed palmettes, set diagonally; then egg and dot at rim. Underside unglazed.
Both clay and glaze considerably grayed from burning.

Context:   Pyre in House T, Room 2, five layers under floor = House D. Late 5th. c. B.C.
