Title:   Amis Fragments: Banded
Category:   Pottery
Description:   a) Missing all base and lower part of body, and some fragments from upper part; strengthened with plaster. Body tapers gently downward along a low convex curve. The top is rounded and dome-like. On one side it bears a horizontal handle with raised edges, sharply upturned. On the opposite side is a wide opening, elliptical in plan, the long axis being horizontal. Around the upper two-thirds of its circumference is a thick projecting rim, rounded along its outer edge. The balance of the circumference is plain.
Buff clay, black glaze, fired brown and partly worn, covers the handle and the projecting rim, and is applied also in broad bands around the body from top to bottom.
b) Three joining fragments preserve much of base and lower part of body; strengthened with plaster. Ring foot, spreading above, vertical or slightly tapering below; broad flat resting surface; inner face slants up to meet underside of floor, which is covered. Extant portion of body flares slightly. Buff clay. Black glaze, fired red, in one band that includes the foot and the adjacent part of the body, and in another higher up. Surface badly worn. Presumably similar to a) but smaller in size.
