Title:   Black Figure Neck Amphora Fragment

Description:   Two joining fragments preserve part of neck and rim, with upper attachment of one handle. From an amphora similar in shape and style to P 10984 (Polos Painter), but with the decoration on the shoulder in panels, not continuous. Broad projecting rim with overhanging lip; band handle. On upper face of rim, water bird, right; incised rosette; in each neck panel, a lion, right: the tail of one and the top of the head of the other, with an incised rosette, preserved. Free use of added purple; a purple band at the edge of the rim. Glaze firm but rather dull.
Context:   Great Drain, section north of Roman entrance porch.
