Title:   Black Figure Column Krater Fragment

Description:   About a quarter of the circumference of the rim preserved. A bit of the horizontal part of the handle preserved at one end. Mended from three pieces. On the flat top of the rim, a chain of lotus buds, the points out, and a dot between each two buds at their bases. On the start of the handle, part of a spiral. On the concave side of the rim, an animal frieze with pairs of lions and grazing stags confronted. No incision. The encircling tendrils of the lotus pattern are drawn in relief lines.
Good glaze inside and out; an orange wash over the clay; the concave underside of the lip reserved; a red line(?) just below the top of the lip on the inside.
For the animals, cf. Langlotz (1932), Würzburg, no. 526, pl. 193, nos. 135, 211, where they appear on the top of the rim of a column krater attributed to Myson, and dated ca. 500. The main decoration red figure.
