Title:		Black Figure Column Krater Fragments

Description:		Thirteen fragments. a) Mended from many pieces and partly restored in plaster, preserves nearly half of circumference of shoulder and about half of panel on obverse and part of one handle. b) Mended from seven pieces, preserves lower left corner of panel on obverse and part of glazed wall. c) Mended from many pieces, preseres part of panel of reverse. Ten additional single fragments from panels, shoulder and wall. A. Quadriga right. Heads, parts of necks and forelegs and wheel preserved. Youth walks right, looks left. Behind the horses are traces of a head surmounted by a lebes(?). Behind him, Hermes(?) (only petasos remains) and top of head of female figure (Athena?). Leg of man behind chariot. Panel bordered on shoulder by tongue pattern, on sides by debased leaf design. B. Head of Dionysos, right, wreathed, and part of outstretched arm preserved. Athena right, looking left(?), preserved from shoulder to below knees. Bearded figure, possibly Poseidon, right, looking left; top of head, parts of body and feet missing. A separate fragment with a white foot may belong to Athena. White for flesh of women, one horse of quadriga and Poseidon's armor(?); also ornaments on harness. Red for horses' manes, part of harness, stripes on garments, beards of Dionysos and Poseidon, fillet around Poseidon's head. Ground line in both panels. Horizontal top of handle decorated with a palmette with scrolls on either side. Good glaze, rather thin on the inside and thinner toward the top, with the underside of the shoulder unglazed.
