Title:   Black Figure Olpe

Description:   Mended from many pieces. The base, back and handle below lip, entirely missing and parts of the figured panel. Restored in plaster. At top of panel, on lip, checkerboard; on neck, single maeander and looped zigzags with bands between. Sides bordered by two black bands, bottom by one. On the lip, on each side of the handle attachment, a projecting ear. The neck glazed inside for ca. 0.04m. from the top.
Figured zone depicts Herakles in lion skin, with drawn sword, charging right toward an Amazon who has fallen on one knee. She wears a high-crested helmet. Her companion, at the extreme right of the picture, wears a high Persian cap with long tails. Vines in field.
White for the flesh of the Amazons, a stripe on helmet crest and garment border and details on Herakles' short chiton and lion skin(?). Red for tails of Amazon's cap, border of shield, Herakles' sword, and ornament on garment. Red also (the actual color entirely gone) on his hair and beard.
