Title:   Panathenaic Amphora

Description:   Upper part and part of foot missing. Tall, slender pot with high, moulded foot. Athlete facing, holding palm(?). Stele or column at left. Beyond that, a woman right (lower part of skirt only) with a basket(?) before her on the ground. The hairiness of the athlete indicated by incision. White touches added to the reddish-brown glaze. White slip.
ADDENDA Looks Roman. For a possible clue as to entire shape see inscription with relief vases at top in Graindor (1924), Album d'inscriptions attiques d'époque impériale, pl. LXXXII (262/3 A.D.; IG II2, 2245) (GRE). Special product, mid(?)-3rd. c. A.D. (JWH).
