Title:   Panathenaic Amphora Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Thin fabric, with slight horizontal curvature. At the right the face and neck of a figure with long hair faces left. The left side of the fragment is covered by the rim of a large circular object (shield?) which also covers part of the body. Details are rendered by incision but the black wash has not been carried quite up to the thinly painted black outline of the face and neck. Incision for nostril, mouth and necklace extend to the reserved area between the outline and the glazed area. A long black line has been drawn across the face and onto the shield; perhaps the reason why the painting was never finished. The deep incision outlining the "shield" is cut through this black line.
Inside unglazed.
