Title:   Amphora or Jar Fragment

Description:   Almost whole of rim (eight joining fragments).
Cylindrical form with flaring rim, hollowed a little on top (sharp inner edge, grooved lip). A small moulding at top of wall, with traces of handle-attachments (two?) just visible immediately below, in broken areas.
Thinnish brown ware, rather fine-textured, with yellower surface wash. Slight wheel-marks on interior.
Could this be a beehive of earlier date than the deposit? Similar shape with related rim-treatment: I.R. Metzger, in Ducrey et al. (1993), Eretria VIII, Le quartier de la Maison aux mosaiques, p. 112, no. 76, Abb. 172 with comments p. 116 (in building destroyed ca. 300B.C.) JWH, Nov. 1998.
