Title:   Neck Amphora Fragments

Description:   Parts of the neck and shoulder preserved, the large neck fragment strengthened with plaster. Several fragments do not join.
Double round handles with wide spiral bands. Band inside rim. Outer face of lip in two planes with alternating large dots, resembling a broad tongue pattern. In neck panels: front, part of a winged sphinx seated right; back, vegetal ornament.
The fragments from the body preserve part of a large volute and lotus ornament (cf. P 4611) and two portions of figures, one the front legs of an animal walking right, the other the front legs of a seated sphinx(?).
Glaze black to brownish; plentiful incision.
Ζ 1662: Six additional fragments, joining. These give part of the neck and shoulder. On the neck: part of the haunch and wing of a sphinx crouched to right. On the shoulder: the upper part of a mounted man, to right; head in outline, body in black, incision for arm, double spiral filler in field behind. Black glaze much flaked.
