Title:   Red Figure Pyxis Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   From a broad shallow pyxis, Type II; lid has gently domed top, projecting horizontal flange (largely broken away); short vertical flange moulded to fit inside and over edge of pyxis wall. Concave outer edge of this flange reserved. Preserved is a winged Eros, squatting, facing left, holding a mirror out to a figure of which only the left arm is preservd. At the right, a draped figure wearing a chiton, moves left, holding in her outstretched right hand a box from which falls an embroidered scarf. Head and shoulder of this figure missing. Behind her, the end of a cushioned couch. The arm of the figure missing at the left is painted white; also the figure of Eros, except for his wings. Added clay for a band around the head of Eros. Faint traces also of added clay on the wings and the mirror suggest that details (feathers, etc.) were added in relief.
Early Kertch style.
