Title:   Red Figure Hydria Fragment

Description:   From the shoulder of an hydria. Plain band below figured zone. Battle of pygmies and cranes: both move right, alternating. The pygmies are nude; one on the left carries a shield and spear(?), one on the right falls forward. Relief contours, save for the hilly ground beneath the standing figure, and for the left foot of the falling figure. The outline of the shield incised with a compass. Scanty dilute glaze inner drawing; dilute glaze dots on the crane's wing.
Context:   Pocket in bedrock.
