Title:   Draped Female Figure and Fragments: Aphrodite
Category:   Sculpture
Description:   a) Fragment showing folds of himation over left arm. Arm was inset and attached with a square dowel.
b) Draped torso (?) fragment. On one face flat folds appropriate to himation on back of figure. This is from the left side of the figure at knee.
c) An end of drapery, probably himation, modeled only on front. Back shows a strut-like attachment.
All fragments show excellent workmanship and free modeling of the folds. Fragments a) and c) join.
These three fragments had painted on them S 378, the inventory number of the large Hellenistic statue found in the south tower of the Valerian Wall. They cannot have any connection with it but, since they all have traces of mortar, it is possible that they also come from the Valerian Wall.
The three fragments join a well over life-size figure, mended from many other fragments, and were attached to it in July 1959.
The figure is preserved from neck to plinth, so that there is no doubt about pose and movement, but one fragment which supplies the connection in the region of the thighs is interior only so that a gap appears on the surface, which has been filled out with cement. Head broken off at neck. Both forearms missing (carved separately and attached at elbows with iron dowels).
The main gaps of the composition of the draped portion are: left breast and front of left shoulder, left lower leg and hanging himation on left side.
Trapezoidal plinth complete (mended) except for chips.
The figure wears thin chiton and himation. She stands in a swaying pose with weight on the right foot, left foot drawn back.
Careful finish with very elaborate treatment of the folds in Nike Parapet style. Pose and composition recall Hera Borghese.
Individual motifs resemble Aphrodite Frejus, Nike Parapet and Dancing Maenads.
Parian marble.
