Title:   Torso Fragment of Statue of Athena
Category:   Sculpture
Description:   Preserved from just below the waistline to the neck; left arm broken just below the shoulder; right arm at about 0.09m. from the shoulder. Enough of both arms is preserved to show that the right arm was raised up and out to the side, and that the left was held down.
She wears a chiton gathered in about the waist with a belt of two strands. At the sides it is pulled out and hangs down over the belt. It is very sketchily shown on the back. The end of the himation, which was probably thrown around the lower part of the body, falls in heavy folds over her right shoulder. Between the shoulders are traces of hair or helmet.
The gorgoneion is worn on a narrow band that crosses from the right shoulder to the left hip. On each edge of the band there is a row of small holes in which bronze snakes presumably were fastened.
On top of the left shoulder there is a cutting, which must have held something (possibly an owl?). Below this cutting, on the back, is a small serpent in low relief.
Pentelic marble.
