Title: | Mold Fragment for Male Head
Category: | Terracotta Moulds
Description: | A deeply concave mold for making the face and the side of the head (including ears) of a bearded male, about life size. Right half broken away; original surface preserved at top, left edge and back. The hair, including beard, mustache and eye-brows, is indicated by short strokes (in relief in the mould) which suggest that the mold is itself an impression. The eyelashes also are indicated; the pupil is a small dot. Coarse reddish clay with micaceous bites; heavy fabric, gray at core. ADDENDA, I. B.: The difficulty of taking an impression in plaster from this mold shows that it was not intended for such use, but is itself an impression.
Notes: | For the cast shown in the photograph, clay was used, the shrinkage being sufficient to get the cast out.
