APC Image: AK 1150Pithos from Well M. Small pithos with stamped and incised decoration. There is a band of stamped spirals on the neck and a similar band on the shoulder. On the body is a broader band of incised lines and stamped circles. A raised band sets off the neck from the body of the vase. On the broad flat ridge are scratched the letters "DIK". The decoration is similar to that on a large pithos used for burial in the cemetery at the Dipylon. It was published as a geometric grave, although nothing was found within the pithos that would throw light on its period. On the other hand we have several fragments of two similar but larger pithoi (cf. AK 1158) from the bottom of Well V with identical decorations, and other fragments from Y-Z (cf. AK 1159). Inasmuch as all these came from late sixth century B.C. Deposits and the pithos under discussion was found in a similar context, there can be little doubt that the large pithos from the Kerameikos is of approximately the same date.
