Stratum:   Layer within rubbish pit - dark blackish brown sandy silt, loosely packed with 2 % small and medium pebbles
Notes:   With B51 we removed the tile jumble in the corner S and W of Walls 290 and 291. There was a patch (10%) of more small and medium pebbles. After a few cm., then the soil became even blacker and had pebbles of all sizes (5 %). Pieces of tiles seem to go under Wall 290 in places. They also stuck into the clay in W and S boundaries of this square feature. The basket ended on a harder layer with red and white patches in a blackish background. Note that the block of Wall 290 just E of this pit has slipped down (earthquake activity?) so may not be later than the pit. Wall 291 has a stone N of this pit under the second course down which seems to belong to Hellenistic wall 271
