Stratum:   Lens of building debris. Reddish brown silty sand between 40-90% rounded cobbles, flat-laid roof tiles, yellow and red mud-brick.
Notes:   We opened this basket to explore the destruction debris we are encountering. We began in the southwest section of the trench near wall 291. Our first objective was to understand the small round lens with 4-5 stones on its west side (ca. N974,25/E411,50). This softer area yielded no results. We then explored along wall 291 to the corner, and the area south and southeast of the block in the trench's NW cornerwhere there was more mud-brick.
This allowed us to remove the tiles and stones in the southwest quadrant of the trench. Complete dimensions were obtained form some tiles. The soil peeled off in the general area to an area just below the tiles, so it appears that the tiles fell (or were thrown) onto lightly conpacted soil. Perhaps the high mud-brick contents of the fill of B 32 is responsible for its apparently higher compaction than the fill below. Tiles were laid out near the trench for reconstruction.
Most fragments of an echinus bowl were found E410.25-410,75/N974,50-975; elevation 91.00-91,10). We overdug the area of the bowl in order to find as many fragments as possible. At this point the soil changes and appears to go toward the wall so we picked no further. The upper parts of the echinus bowl must have been immediately below the flat-laid debris.
Next we excavated the north edge of the trench on the west side, NE and N of the largest boulder near the corner. The soil is the clay-rich reddish brown we havfe encountered elsewhere, except near the center of the N scarp, wher ethere is higher carbon content.
The excavator detected a long line of softer soil running parallel to wall 294, from wall 2911 in the south to the boulder near the NW corner of the trench.
-15/6/06: After copmleting and cleaning, a fairly clear cut of slightly more compact brown fill with small stones and building debris was clear, running along Wall 294 at least to N 975 from the corner with wall 291. It rounded the corner with 291 and continued east. It strongly resembles a foundation trench for these walls, although it is not fully revealed yet. We are changing baskets to close out the destruction debris (finally) and pursue the remaining mud-brick-rich fill.
