Stratum:   Ashy fill accumulated in hearth. Semi-compacted clayey silt, light yellowish brown with high ash content
Notes:   With this basket we are taking out the sahy fill in the N scarp that appeared to be a hearth. We were unsure of the stratigraphic relationship of the ash to the debris accumulated to the E. We suspected the E debris to be on top (later) than the hearth but did not wish to take out such a clear feature. So instead we carefully separated the vertical cut between the two fills and pursued the ash. It quickly bottomed out on a clay/mud-plastered surface that continjued over a south perimeter line of stones, the edge of the hearth. So we have a mud-plastered hearth, and the rubble to its east actually fell over it (stratigraphically later), though we can take it cleanly, without contamination. Next however, we will clean ashy soil just south of the hearth for photography. We sieved the fill, producing a well-preserved coin, although by mistake the rest of the sherds were mixed with B55 (the ash outside the hearth). These should be roughly contemporary.
