Lot:   Lot 2007-001
Stratum:   Cistern 2006-01 fill. Light yellowish brown; fine grained soft with 15% inclusions; very poorly sorted. Clayey sand.
Notes:   This basket is a continuation of basket 88, following a break upon noticing an increased number of cobble to boulder size inclusions. This layer also appears in the artificial scarp created by the 2006 excavation of the eastern half of the cistern. It appears as if we have reached a layer of fill with additional and larger inclusions. IN the first pass, a number of tile fragments and a few large fragments of cement in the eastern half of the basket. The cement fragments likely belong to a floor rather than from the cistern wall. The western half of the excavated area has not turned up any large rocks or tile or cement fragments. A few more inclusions, medium-sized pebbles turned up in the SW corner of the basket. Inclusions in the eastern portion of the excavated (basket 89) protion were up to 30% by the end of the first pass. Some mudbrick. A miniature bowl was uncovered at E 411.70, N 975.84, elevation 89.79. Two ocnical shaped loomweights were found in the second pass at the same level as the miniature bowl. A terracotta head was found at E 410.67, N 975.74, elevation 89.75. Two passes were taken in this basket because there was no change in the soil or its general composition. However, we noticed that the eastern half of the basket yielded significantly more roof tiles, cemented plaster, large cobbles and boulders, mudbrick chunks and quantity of pottery. At first we considered the possibility of a pit in the eastern half of the basket, however the lack of a soil change did not support this pit hypothesis. Consequently, a second pass was tkaen in this basket. Again the second pass revealed significantly fwer and smaller inclusions (including pottery) in the western half of the basket. The 2nd pass was taken down to a point where there were no more large inclusions (tiles, pottery, cement plaster, etc) visible in the artificial scarp created by the 2006 excavation of the eastern cistern fill. Example sof large inclusions found in the eastern half of basket 89 included several chunks of iron slag and a very large pithos rim. Small finds within this basket included two bags of bone (some pieces burned, a few tiny animal jaw bones, and at least one bone piece that was smoothly cut), shell, a few corroded metal chunks, a metal tack and an animal tooth. Small bits of mudbrick and charcoal were observed however there has not been as much as in some previous baskets. A bronze coin was found at E 411.66, N 95.01, elevation 89.76. In total, 2+ zembils of tile fragmetns and cement plaster were collected. All soilw as dry sifted except for two bags collected for water sieving. A third loomwieght was found at the same approximate level as the coin described above. We also observed a small burnt piece of mudbrick.
