Context:   72

Date:   2007/04/19
Lot:   Lot 2007-012
Stratum:   Mixed fill west of pit 2006-4, light, yellowish-brown, poorly cemented, 10% inclusions, moderately sorted, pebbles and cobbles
Notes:   Removal of the rest of the martyr around the well head/manhole. This martyr was removed to reveal the architectural elements of the well head/manhole cover and to determine whether the fill around this feature was the same/contemporary with that removed in baskets 57, 59, 65, 66, and 70. The mixed fill continued to reveal some pottery as well as large amounts of painted wall plaster. These finds and the nature of the stratum suggest that this is part of the same fill uncovered in these earlier baskets. We also found small amounts of glass, bronze, and iron. In addition to these, we recovered two coins, and intact bone needle, and an intact glass inset/bezel. We closed the basket when we reached the bottom level of basket 70 so that if the fill is explored further in the future it might be explored as a single unit.
