Stratum:   Fill from cut of castellum drain to W 215 and to W 289 to cut of pebbly soil of B 22. Soil is mixed medium reddish brown with redder patches, 20% pebbles, 20% cobbles, compact.
Notes:   B 28 is a pass along the entire area of fill below the floor surface just removed (B 27) and the bottom of the possible robbing trench (B 26). We will create a thick baulk of soil on the back of the curving wall of the castellum drain to preserve it as it is already starting to crumble a bit. Much less pottery turned up at the end of the last bakset, and we will stop sieving and may even us a big pick.
This basket contains almost no pottery; 5 or 6 handmade sherds and two amphora handles which came out quite close to the walls. This seems colluvial at best, and we stop the basket. Thanassis locates a round area of blacker, softer soil with rocks under the eastern edge of the area of the so called robbing trench, the easter end of this round soft patch may cut into the baulk of pebbly soil left in B 22. What this circle is, how certain we are it exists in the baulk, and what the relation of the pebbly baulk to the colluvial red soil of this basket are all highly uncertain. See top plan pg. 50.
