Stratum:   Associated with leveling around ground up to cistern wall at time of construction. Light yellowish brown. Fine grained soft. 30% inclusions, medium to coarse pebbles; clayey sand.
Notes:   Basket 36 removed a brownish stratum located just north of and on top of the northern wall of Cistern 2006-01, Wall 298. The osil was very distrubed from the reddish alluvial layer to the north and it is clear that Basket 36 cut into this red layer. The top of this basket was first exposed at the end of Basket 33. The goal of the basket was to investigate the exterior northern edge of the cistern in hopes that the fill may provide a helpful foundation date. The basket had a significant number of inclusions, most large pebbles. Small finds included a large chunk of iron slag, an obsidian flake and bone. The brown soil was removed to the north of Wall 298 but it also was covering a number of wall stones to the western basket. These rocks appear to be part of the cistern wall, however, they extend much further north than the walls to the east. It is unclear exactly with what the cutting and fill can be associated. One possibility seems to be that a cutting was made into the red alluvial soil for the construction of the cistern and then, after the cistern construction, the small basket area was filled in to bring the level up to the level of the top cistern wall stone. All soil in this basket was sieved. The exact relationship of this cutting and fill to the cistern needs further consideration.
