Title:   Room 7 - Ashy fill Southwest of Wall 126
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   122
Date:   2016/06/14
Stratum:   Mixed: soil ranges from black to brown and dark to light. Ash; 5% bone, 5% pottery-- some large sherds of an amphora; a few small chunks of charcoal
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We opened context 122 to excavate the area south of wall 126 and to better understand the stratigraphy of the room. Initially, we were unsure of whether the southern section of the room was composed of multiple deposits, since the eastern section appeared more ashy and less red than the western section. We decided to excavate the surface area as context 122 to find a boundary between the two sections, if such a boundary existed. After two passes through the area, it became clear that there was a red deposit, roughly 0.30 meters wide, running diagonally from the corner of walls 126 and 82 to the northwest corner of the reddish deposit which remained exposed at the southwest corner of the room. At that point, we closed context 122 and prepared to excavate the area between the diagonal reddish deposit and the pit (context 106). From this context we found a lamp, a piece of possible iron slag, and 61 pieces of glasss, 51 of which came from sieving.
21/6/16 TB and EJ: Glass stem from this context seems to resemble in size and color stems from contexts 79, 140, 128, and 106, but the stem is too ill-preserved to determine similarity with certainty.
