Title:   Room 7 - Ashy Deposit in Northern Section
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   85
Date:   2016/06/09
Stratum:   Large tile fragments 15% or more (around 0.15 x 0.10 x 0.02, some larger); some ash content; 5-10% pottery.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   We opened context 85, having distinguished soil to the south of much higher clay content (perhaps bounded by a possible wall) from the darker and softer soil to the North. There was a concentration of ash in the NW corner, and in the second pass, a concentration of ash in the SE corner as well; toward the bottom of the context, ash was distributed more or less throughout. A lot of tile fragments were at the top of the context, but inclusions altogether became drastically less dense the further down we excavated. We closed this context after reaching a subtle change to a more reddish soil. Three iron nails, four pieces of glass, and an iron object were found. A roof tile and a terracotta lamp were also collected amongst the pottery.
21/6/16 TB and EJ: Door hinge or padlock collected from this context dates to the Late Byzantine period (1059-1210 CE).
NA-26: large iron door hinge
NA-27: small iron door hinge
