Title:   Blackish deposit north of pit 870
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1107
Context:   1051

Date:   2013/04/12
Stratum:   105; small pebbles, ceramic sherds, tile, pieces of carbon
Description:   Top slope of the context is steep down to the SE. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We started digging this fill in order to understand depositional activities outside of the south wall of the Turkish house. The deposit is directly next to the cut 870 and so far it is not clear whether the pit cut the deposit or the pit is within the pit. The blackish fill contained some pottery and pebble, but not in large quantities. The soil is quite dark and has some charcoal inclusions in it. We decided not to wet sieve it, however, because it is probably a dump fill of cut 870.
The diggind revealed a concentration of stones underneath, reminding of a foundation wall or something similar. Thanasis the foreman thinks that it might be a part of a wall perhaps related to the wall 918 that runs E-W and which was cut by cut 870. Perhaps the revealed corner might be the western continuation of the wall. Both seem to have a layer of stone over a thick deposit of tile. Rossana Valente, however, suggested that the exposed stones might be oriented in N-S direction. In order to reach any conclusion, however, we need to remove the baulk to the north of the wall.
Since the soil of the same color and consistency continues north and west of the revealed layer of stones toward the Turkish house, Thanasis will continue digging that soil as a continuation of the present context after the weekend.
