Stratum:   15%- small cobbles, tile, ceramic sherds, small pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the SE. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context is the removal of a fill just north of Cut 809, which retst on top and around an apse made of a single layer of large cobbles, just west of S1047. This was a thorough cleaning of the cobbles in order to have a better view of the structure 1047 and its surroundings. The semicircle of cobbles runs from E-W, and delineates a small apse on the east side, which continues under the western baulk of the excabation area and is cut by C809 to the south.
The fill included small cobbles, tile and round pebbles in large quantities, but did not show any traces of mortar. At this point it is difficult to tell with certainty the relationship between S1047 and the apse. It seems that S1047 is laid on the apse, but they also might abut; but we need to excavate the structures before we can reach any conclusions. For now, however, we decided to stop digging in this area in order to edxplore the strata to the north.
