Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context lies directly south of Drain 1026 and within the robbing trench of Wall 918. The stones exposed at the west end of the context had not been uncovered last year, so with this context we have found a further extent of Wall 918. We opened the contect in order to understand how the robbing trench and drain relate to each other.
We now see that cut 870 definitely cut the robbing trench and the remaining section of the wall in the bottom of the robbing trench (cut 919). The relationship between the wall and the drain is difficult to determine, since the contemporary levels directly to the south have been removed by the creation of cut 870. However, the first tile of the bottom of the drain is fully preserved and lies directly on the edge of the robbing trench and appears to have traces of mortar on its south edge. Thus, it is possible that the drain and the wall are related, and the drain may have even started at the wall. Alternatively, the robbing trench (cut 919) may have cut the drain, coincidentally right at the end of one of its bedding tiles. In any case, our earlier theory that the drain may have ran through a doorway in the wall needs to be reevaluated.
We closed the context upon reaching the stones of the wall.
