Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is very dark greenish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This is a small fill consisting of somewhat burnt soil, located just N of wall 1087, and under the large tile fill 1080. We started excavating it in order to understand the depositional processes in this are and the use of the area before it was covered by the fill 1080.
The small fill exposed a course of small boulders running in E-W direction under the wall 1087, which were clearly its continuation, because the boulders were partially projecting north from the wall and were partially covered by upper course of the same wall. We will clean the bottom of the context very well before we proceed drawing this part of the structure and before we asses the exact relationship between the exposed boulders and the upper courses of the wall.
Since the soil is quite burnt, we took a sample for water sieving amd we sifted 50% of the context. In addition to pieces of charcoal, the context yielded some pockets of plaster as we were digging around the stones. After cleaning the context, we discovered that the single course of small boulders which was uncovered, continue all the way to the end of the excavation area and might in fact continue under the west baulk. The small boulders are definitely a part of the wall, since the wall rests directly on top of them, even though they are projecting slightly more to the north. Perhaps, they belong to the foundation of the wall. Therefore, we stopped digging once we hit once we affirmed this relationship. Thus, the current deposit might have comprised a part of a robbing trench of the wall.
