Stratum:   25% inclusions, consisting of ash, morter, ceramics, bone, seeds, charcoal, glass, iron nails, and 3 coins. Only one basket of pottery was taken.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   When we were digging context 1101 we discovered a dark, burned looking layer in the NW of area 1101. We are digging the area under hearth 1065 in order to see if the dark, ashy area beneath 1078 and 1084 is connected to the dark layer revealed by the removal of 1101. The soil is filled with strains of ash. Also, there is a layer of mortar immediately below where the hearth was, probably associated with the hearth. Several pieces of glass were found. We decided to sieve 50% because of the area's association with hearth 1065. Coin 151 was found in situ.
8 May we return to the site after a long weekend--dirt is not too dry because of humid conditions. GDRS suggests we sift 100% because coins are belonging to a slightly later date than he though this context was dated (2nd quarter of 6th rather than late 5th).
Under this area when it was finished we saw an area filled with tiles and collapsed mudbrick, so we have decided to dig the area to the west of 1101 next, to see if this is the same layer as that found further to the East (at the west edge of context 1101). This will be 1103.
