Name:   Nezi Field, context 1162
Area:   Nezi Field
Title:   Sandy, rocky fill north of wall 366
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1107
Context:   1162
Page:   0
Date:   2013/05/30
Stratum:   60% sandy limestone rocks (5-25 cm), some rounded pebbles, <5% pottery, tile, wall plaster
Description:   The soil color is light reddish yellow. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   This is a uniform context over our current excavation area, cut at the NW by lime pit C882, at east by possible robbing trench 888, at south by wall 366, and SW by foundation trench 1161. The deposit appears to run up against well 732 and the ashlar of tile structure 1158 along its west adge, suggesting that they were already in place when this deposit was formed (i.e. there is no sign of a foundation trench or other disturbance along this edge).
Composition of this context is very sandy soil with sandy limestone rocks, which Guy said looks like cut-up bedrock from around this area; Rossana suggested that this fill could come from excavation of nearby wells 742 and 902. Cultural material is rather sparse. Removal of this context included the plastered east and south sides of the lime pit (C882), which were weakly cemented and about 5 cm thick. Rounded pebbles are an oddity in deposits from Nezi, and their presence and abundance in this context is peculiar and inexplicable. They seem water-worn, all sorts of different stone (in a range of colors, from white to black), and stand out clearly from the sandy yellow matrix.
Foundation trench 1161 partially cuts through 1162, but stops at a transitional point in wall 366. To the east of this point (1007.01N, 260.91E), deposit 1162 runs up to wall 366, suggesting that the deposition of 1162 postdates the construction of the east end of 366 but predates the western end (which was later largely robbed by 682). In order to avoid contamination from the foundation trench (1161), we left a narrow skin baulk between this deposit and the trench fill which we will excavate later.
