Stratum: | mixed black soil in the cut and sandy soil of deposit 1162, cobbles, tile, pottery
Description: | Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is light reddish yellow. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes: | This is the E-W skin baulk left between the dark soil of 1160 (closed early) and 1162, the thick sandy deposit covering our entire excavation area, so that the latter wouldn't be contaminated with material from the former. Cleaning around the north face of wall 366, the masonry style changes from even courses of angular flat rocks to larger, rounded stones more loosely set and widening the face of the wall. This may represent the bottom of the western extent of wall 366 (see notes for cut 1161). Foundation trench 1161 also seems to peter out at this elevation, and the reddish soil exposed mostly by context 1162 clearly runs up against the west side of wall 366. Later in the day, as the soil dried a bit, it appeared that we reached the bottom of the west end of the wall, as the last course rests on soil.
