Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is very dark brownish red. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This context is a firm deposit of reddish soil south of wall 1087. We hoped by the removal of this context to discover the western end of the lime pit, as well as to see whether we could find the western continuation of the reddish deposit east of well 742. We left a narrow skin baulk around the edge of the putative cut in robbing trench 687, bordering the south end of this context, because we are more interested in focusing are investigation on the area N of Wall 366.
The context seems to have a lot of architectural and building material debris (tiles, plaster, tesserae) and relatively small quantities of finds (pottery, glass, etc.).
5/6/13
The morning we continued digging the north and west areas of the context. Thanasis alternated use of the big pick and small pick to find the extent of this quite large, deep deposit which seems to be exposing several distinct formations. Just west of well 742 is a triangular bit (0.70 x 0.70 m) of very compact red soil which appeared to continue through the well itself (cementing the architectural pieces) and into the entire eastern half of our current excavation area. To the south and west is a looser, brown soil with larger stones; this extends under the area of hearth 910 (cut 1173, the traces of which were completely removed by this context) and all the way to the western scarp of the Nezi excavation area.
12:30 p.m.
As Thanasis continued digging through the deposit, he determined that those areas previously demarcated as possibly different (as described above) were in fact a continuation of the same brownish-red, tile-rich layer of fill. Instead, under 1187 is a layer of soil with similar color and compaction, but with no apparent tiles.
Thanasis also excavated down to the elevation of the lime pit (cut 882, excavated as 1176), and no trace of continuation was found. Kate suspected that construction and use of the hearth 910 may have disrupted the western edge; this may suggest the lime pit represents the apparent gap in occupational sequence between the 5th and 11th century which is developing in our pottery and Harris matrix, which seem to go immediately from the Late Byzantine structures and cuts to the late Roman deposits.
Along the far south edge, at the west end of the context area (below the level of cut 687), Thanasis identified the edge of a whiteish surface which seems to continue into the baulk here.
6/6/13
This morning we finished excavating this context, with a final pass over the southeast corner. Immediately west of well 742 is a concentration of large angular boulders sticking up through the soil; the remainder of the exposed area has no visible large rocks. We also exposed the bottom of the large ashlar under tile feature 1158 on its western edge, which seems to be sitting on a similar red soil.
